CCB chose security monitoring from Netsecurity

– We definitely notice that these are different times now. We maintain rigs and vessels for offshore operations, so it is clear that we are a target for sabotage and attacks. This means that we have to work extra hard on security, at every level, says IT Manager Thomas Sekkingstad.

After the leak in the Baltic Sea, the offshore company CCB, like other critical societal functions, was upgraded to security level 2. For CCB, this has meant increased vigilance, more patrols by police and security guards, and not least more measures for IT security:

– We have many international companies docking with us over the course of a year. It is with us that they get the necessary upgrades – from physical to digital. This is why it is very important that we work systematically with IT security. Now we saw that we needed even better monitoring of our infrastructure.

Having 24/7 MDR is fundamentally important today. It was the number one reason why we chose to implement it.

MDR is fundamentally important

MDR (Managed Detection and Response) is about uncovering and responding to suspicious activity in the company’s infrastructure. When the fastest hackers in the world use 10–12 minutes from finding a vulnerability until they have taken over your system, response time means everything:

– Having 24/7/365 MDR is absolutely fundamentally important today, and that was the reason why we wanted to introduce it here. We needed experts to rely on, and that is why we chose Netsecurity.

Ordinary alerts are not good enough

CCB has long had an alert system, but it has only monitored whether servers and infrastructure are up and running

– We would never have been able to stop an attack at the outset with the alert system we have used until now. In practice, that means you have already been attacked when you are alerted, and then it is of course too late. We did not want to end up in that situation, explains the IT manager.

Automatic monitoring provides a response within minutes

Netsecurity is one of the few Norwegian providers to have automated security monitoring. This means that all alarms are both analyzed and handled automatically: The automation takes care of 90% of the alarms, while the most advanced alarms are forwarded to the experts on the 24/7 monitoring team:

– Netsecurity's platform ensures a response time of just a few minutes. That gives me peace of mind; now I know that we have a partnership that enables us to act lightning-fast if something happens, says Sekkingstad.

Very simple integration

blinQ, which is a partner of Netsecurity and CCB’s advisory IT partner, assisted CCB throughout the entire process – from decision to implementation of the SOC.

– It was almost surprisingly easy to get started. Netsecurity got access to our infrastructure and our API, we made sure that we had a system in place to receive alerts – and then we were up and running.

It was almost surprising how easy it was to get started!

Owners and senior management who prioritize IT security

CCB is far ahead in terms of security. But Sekkingstad has understood that it is not possible to lean back, and therefore always works according to the principle of keeping up with the times and staying updated based on the threat landscape.

– The warnings are serious now. It is not a question of if something will happen, but when. When we have the customers we have, and work in the industry we do, it is clear that we are on the radar. This is why it is very important that we strengthen ourselves – and continue to strengthen ourselves in line with the threat landscape, explains Sekkingstad.

The IT manager is not alone in thinking about IT security. Both the owners and senior management at CCB take IT security seriously:

– I have support all the way from the top, and that clearly makes my work easier to carry out.

Better sleep at night?

So finally – the million-dollar question: Does IT manager Sekkingstad sleep well at night now?

– Hehe… I do not know whether I – or any other IT managers in my industry, for that matter – can say that we sleep well at night. But I can at least say that I sleep an awful lot better, concludes a smiling Sekkingstad.
